SmartHalo’s design philosophy is centered on simplicity. Biking in cities can be a challenge, so we’ve made sure our device was simple to use, yet smart. How? By reducing its interface to its simplest possible form – a circle.
One of our biggest challenge was to make sure SmartHalo would fit any bike, right in the center of the handlebar. After months of sketching and modeling, we found an elegant, durable and minimalist solution.
Have you ever seen a car driver remove its headlights after parking? Neither have we. Why should bikers have to remove their accessories after each ride? We designed SmartHalo to install permanently on your bike while making sure it doesn't get stolen – it will withstand the world’s harshest urban environments. Its unique, military-grade locking system ensures it stays on your bike to assist you when you need it.
It's so simple anyone could use it. We don’t want our users browsing endless menus – we want them biking. We’ve spent countless hours testing this interface and success will be measured by how little time it takes to get you going.
We designed SmartHalo to be beautiful inside and out. There is no on/off button – its sophisticated sensors detect your presence. When you finish your ride, it automatically shuts down. This leads to amazing battery life, to keep going as long as you do. Under standard usage, SmartHalo will last around three weeks.
We believe that technology should not be something you have to worry about – it should just work. We're urban cyclists who wanted to deal with the main problems of biking in cities: navigation and security. We found that the existing solutions right now were just not suited for harsh urban environments. They fall in two main categories:
- Bike accessories and gadgets that need to be removed after each ride, stuffed with energy-intensive screens and awkward maps;
- Fancy (and expensive) smart bikes that are attractive to thieves and require you to replace your existing ride.
This is why we created SmartHalo. We built something that fits on any bicycle, is durable, tamper-proof and intuitive to use.
Risks and challenges
Ok, hardware is hard and our project, ambitious – we need to get design, software, electronics, suppliers and financing right. Admittedly, this is no easy feat.
But we’re not starting from scratch. We’ve been bootstrapping with our own money for the last year to create working prototypes and companion apps in both iOS and Android. Our list of electronic components is almost final and we’re putting the final touches to our CAD designs.
Now we need to go from prototype to mass-production to distribution.
We’re working with suppliers and the entire supply chain will be confirmed by October. Also, the team will be moving to Asia to complete mass production. We are happy to announce that we will join Brinc.io, a hardware accelerator specializing in connected devices. They will ensure that the process of going from concept to a finished product goes smoothly. Mass production should start early 2016, to have a product shipped to our Kickstarter backers in May 2016.
